They’ll begin the season together, and they’ll
probably end the season together. When play begins today at the
Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, the UCLA men’s
tennis team will get a look at some of the best in the country, the
same individuals they hope to see at the NCAA championships in May.
Though players from only a handful of teams will be participating
in the tournament, which runs through Monday, Baylor, UCLA,
Stanford and USC are among those teams, and they all begin the
season ranked in the top-10. Sam Warburg, the tournament’s
top seed and defending Pac-10 champion, is ranked No. 4 in the
nation. Benjamin Becker, the No. 2 player from defending national
champion Baylor, is seeded second, while a pair of Bruins, Benjamin
Kohlloeffel and Luben Pampoulov, are seeded No. 3 and No. 4,
respectively. UCLA’s Jaysen Chung, Chris Lam, Philipp
Gruendler, Jason Nguyen and Mathieu Dehaine will also be competing
this weekend for the Bruins. Pampoulov and Kohlloeffel, who each
had stellar seasons in the fall, appear to be the Bruins’
best chances to bring the tournament title back to Westwood. Tobias
Clemens, who was a senior last season, won the Sherwood Collegiate
Cup the last three years.

MEN’S SOCCER: With contributions from
four Bruins, the U.S. Under-20 Men’s national team defeated
Trinidad & Tobago 6-1 Tuesday in its opening match of the
CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament at the Home Depot Center in Carson,
Calif. Sophomore midfielder Benny Feilhaber helped set up the first
four goals. Two minutes into the first half, he found fellow Bruin
Marvell Wynne on the right flank. Wynne then crossed a pass to
Eddie Gaven, who scored his first of three goals on the day.
Feilhaber also drew a penalty to set up another goal in the first
half and assisted another Gaven goal later on. Patrick Ianni and
Chad Barrett, the latter leaving UCLA after his sophomore season to
join Major League Soccer, also played in the game. While Feilhaber
and Barrett played the whole game, Ianni and Wynne were taken off
the field in the first half after sustaining injuries. Ianni had
some blurred vision after going up for a challenge in the air,
while Wynne sustained a contusion to his sciatic nerve after
getting undercut. Both are expected to be ready for the
team’s next game Friday against Panama.

ARCHERY: UCLA had a strong showing at last
weekend’s California Indoor State Championships. Kate
Anderson and Stanley Cheng led the way in the college recurve
division, each setting California indoor records at the meet with
scores of 1090 and 1083 respectively. With the victories, both have
qualified for the World Indoor Trials in Texas this weekend. UCLA
sent seven other archers to the event this past weekend, boasting
one of the largest turnouts of all the schools. “We’re
all about the numbers and getting more people into archery,”
Anderson, a team captain, said.
