Individuals and governments alike continue to pledge financial
support as the full magnitude of the South Asian tsunami disaster
has become apparent.

The aid has come in the form of cash, supplies, logistical
support and pledges of future developmental assistance. Combined,
billions of dollars have been pledged. In fact, U.S. citizens may
raise private donations exceeding $2 billion.

The tsunami is an immediate crisis of undeniably tremendous
proportions, but it is not the first or last worthy cause. Other
humanitarian causes receive less media attention, and are less
dramatic, but nonetheless deserve attention.

Countless thousands die of starvation and disease in Africa
every year. Dozens of regional conflicts in places ranging from
Eastern Europe to South America produce refugees and orphans every
day. And even here, in the most prosperous of nations, millions of
indigent people scrounge for food and shelter.

Most of these stories will never make the evening news. Fewer
still will benefit from organized aid efforts. But, after making a
donation to tsunami relief, don’t forget a few dollars or
hours could make all the difference.
