How do you feel about the regents’ decision on the
check-box system? What do you think is the best solution?
Miguel Griot Graduate student, electrical
engineering “You can’t be marking just one box
if you are from several countries. That was a mistake, I think. You
should be able to tell that you come from two origins, not just be
multi-ethnic. I don’t like the idea of just separating people
by ethnicity anyway.” Nicholas Tang Third-year,
chemistry “Giving people the option to choose is a
better idea because it gives more flexibility, it gives more
options. Couldn’t there be a system where if you say
multi-ethnic, white and black, then they would list you as both
white and black?” Maggie Wells Third-year, molecular,
cell and developmental biology and women’s studies
“They definitely need a lot more boxes to check because I
know that they don’t have Middle Eastern there at all, which
I think is kind of silly. I suppose if they’re trying to get
more accurate then they should just allow more boxes to be
checked.”
