The women’s rowing team has received five commitments for
the 2005 season. Lexie Howard, Melanie Seto, Vanessa Teff, Katie
Virk and Katja Wanberg all signed letters of intent during the
early signing period. Three of the recruits are from outside
California, and landing them was a notable achievement for a
program that has drawn most of its athletes from within the state.
“We are very happy with this fall’s signees,”
coach Amy Fuller said in a statement. “We continue to recruit
well in California, but we have also shown that we can attract the
best high school rowers from throughout the country. These five
student-athletes will definitely play a big role in UCLA’s
continued climb up the Pac-10 and national rankings.” Teff,
who recently competed in the Championship Double event at the Head
of the Charles Regatta in Boston, has been considered a main prize
in the recruiting class. Hailing from Middleton, Wis., Teff is a
part of the Mendota Rowing Club and rowed for the United States
Junior National Team in the 2004 World Rowing Championships in
Banyoles, Spain. Howard will also add substantial experience to
next year’s squad. As a member of the Norwalk River Rowing
Association, she has been a part of a crew that captured the Head
of the Riverfront and finished second at the Head of the
Connecticut.
CROSS COUNTRY: UCLA had six women named to the
Pac-10 All-Academic team. Junior Jenna Timinsky and senior Carmen
Winant earned first team honors, juniors Allison Hall and Sarah
West made the second team, and junior Leslie Barrie and sophomore
Ashley Caldwell received Honorable Mention. On the men’s
side, senior Erik Emilsson made the second team, while Austin Ramos
earned Honorable Mention.
