Five alums playing for love and basketball will face
current Bruins
The UCLA women’s basketball team will
open up its exhibition season on Sunday when it hosts Love and
Basketball at Pauley Pavilion. The floor will be littered with
Bruins, current and former, as Love and Basketball has five former
UCLA players on its roster. The list of former Bruins competing
against UCLA this weekend includes Michelle Greco (1999-03),
Natalie Nakase (2000-03), Gennifer Arranaga (2001-04), Marie
Philman (1997-2000) and Sandra VanEmbricqs (1987-90). UCLA opens up
its regular season on Nov. 19 against TCU.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Coach Al Scates will be
inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of
Fame next month. The honor is one more in a long list for Scates,
who is also part of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, California
Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame, and USA Volleyball Hall of Fame.
Scates has coached the Bruins for the past 42 years, guiding the
team to 18 NCAA Championships since 1970 and 24 conference titles.
His 1,083 career victories rank him atop all collegiate coaches and
he has also won national coach of the year honors five times.
During his tenure, Scates has coached 75 All-Americans and 22
Olympians. The ceremony, held at the Long Beach Westin Hotel, will
also induct former Washington University in St. Louis coach Teri
Clemons, Sandra Vivas, the first full-time director of the AVCA,
and former Olympian Debbie Green.

TENNIS: All three Bruins advanced into the
second round at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor
Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. yesterday. Sophomore Benjamin
Kohlloeffel defeated Oklahoma’s Marek Velicka5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to
earn a second round match against Washington’s Alex Slovic in
the second round today. On the women’s side, freshman Riza
Zalameda also moved into the second round after knocking off seeded
player Jennifer Magley of Florida 6-3, 7-5. Like Kohlloeffel, she
will also face a Husky next, Dea Sumantri. The only Bruin to fall
in the first round was sophomore Daniela Bercek, who lost to
third-seeded Megan Bradley of Miami, 6-4, 6-3. However, Bercek
teamed with Zalameda in doubles to defeat William &
Mary’s Megan Muth and Amy Wei, 8-6. The duo will play
Michigan’s Michelle DaCosta and Kara Delicata today.
