Krystin Lacy and Chanelle Curry, two standout sprinters from
Skyline High School in Dallas, orally committed to UCLA on their
official visit to the school this past weekend, according to the
Dallas Morning News. Lacy, one of the country’s top prep
sprinters, won the Texas state title in the 100 and 200 meters last
season. She had the nation’s fastest 200m time among non-high
school seniors last year with a time of 23.45 seconds, and her best
100m time is 11.44 seconds. Many of the top collegiate programs in
the country were interested in Lacy, who also reportedly visited
Texas, South Carolina and Georgia Tech. The defending national
champion Bruins ultimately won the recruiting battle because Lacy
saw the opportunity to contribute right away. With senior Monique
Henderson, the runner-up in the 400m at the NCAA Championships,
slated to graduate this June, Lacy could be her heir apparent.
Curry, also an integral part of Skyline’s state championship
team a year ago, has a personal best of 55.64 seconds in the 400m.
She could provide immediate help for UCLA on its 4x400m relay as a
freshman.

TENNIS: Freshman Riza Zalameda and sophomore
Benjamin Kohlloeffel will begin competition at the ITA National
Indoor Championships today in Ann Arbor, Mich. Both players earned
invitations by winning the ITA Fall Regional Championships two
weeks ago. Sophomore Daniela Bercek will also compete in this
week’s singles event and will team up with Zalameda in the
doubles draw. Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta, who qualified for
this week’s tournament by winning the doubles event at the
ITA Fall Regionals, will not be playing. None of the Bruins in the
field were seeded for the tournament.
