Editorial: Late outcry over decision on Taco Bell

Now that Taco Bell has closed, its removal seems to have finally
struck a cord with students.
Though no individuals or groups vocally supported the eatery
during the much-publicized campaign to remove Taco Bell, the campus
is now abuzz with cries that Taco Bell should be allowed to
stay.
Where were all these outraged students when their input could
have actually been valuable? Now that the Associated Students of
UCLA have cast their final vote, the campus should not yet again
visit this issue.
For the last year we’ve all known Taco Bell could
potentially be evicted ““ countless stories have been written
detailing the progress of the anti-Taco Bell campaign. While a few
wrote letters praising the chain’s low prices and
convenience, there was never an organized counter-effort.
So why have over 1,000 students now signed a petition asking
ASUCLA to revisit the issue yet again? The main argument is that
Taco Bell is really cheap.
But there are other inexpensive chains that do not use tomatoes
from allegedly exploited pickers and would not flatly ignore their
agreement with ASUCLA to commission an independent review of the
situation.
ASUCLA made the right choice and should not reverse itself. The
suddenly awakened pro-Taco Bell student activists should have
voiced their concerns earlier.
