UCLA sweep teams in round-robin play, loses only 2 games
in 4 matches UCLA’s men’s volleyball team
capped off a flawless effort at the Husky Dino Cup with a 25-20,
25-21, 25-17 victory over the University of Saskatchewan in the
finals. The Bruins dropped just two games in their four matches en
route to their fourth championship in the tournament’s
18-year history. After needing five games to defeat the University
of Calgary in their first game, the Bruins swept Saskatchewan and
York University in round-robin play. In the rematch against the
Huskies in the finals, senior Kris Kraushaar led the Bruins with
eight kills, while sophomore Steve Klosterman added seven. Redshirt
freshman Julio Acevedo had 30 assists and junior libero Aaron
Wexler added eight digs in a match where the Bruins outhit the
Huskies .354 to .081. The Bruins also outblocked the Huskies 12.5
to 4.0. Senior quick hitter Paul Johnson, who led the Bruins with
six blocks against the Huskies, was named to the tournament
all-star team along with teammates Allan Vince and Jonathan
Acosta.
MEN’S GOLF: The Bruins will look to
defend their title in The Prestige at PGA West starting today. The
tournament, hosted by UC Davis at the Greg Norman Course, features
a 16-team field that includes Stanford, Notre Dame, Pepperdine,
Oklahoma and Yale. Two rounds will be played today and the final
round will be completed tomorrow on the par-72 course. Senior John
Poucher, sophomores Peter Campbell, Chris Heintz, and Joakim
Renstrom, and freshmen Daniel Im and Kevin Chappell are expected to
compete for the Bruins. Former Bruins Parker McLachlin and John
Merrick recently advanced to the second stage of PGA Tour
Qualifying School. McLachlin posted a 10-under 278 tied for second
best on the course at the Dayton Valley GC in Dayton, Nev. Merrick
shot a 12-under 276 placing him fourth at the stage in San Juan
Oaks in Hollister, CA. McLachlin and Merrick will now join current
Bruin senior Travis Johnson, who qualified last weekend for the
second stage, in hopes of joining the PGA. The final stage will be
played Dec. 1-6 at the LaQuinta Resort.
SOFTBALL: The USA Elite team captured the
first-ever World University Championships on Sunday in Plant City,
Fla., with a 1-0 victory over Chinese Taipei in the finals.
UCLA’s Andrea Duran led the team in hitting throughout the
tournament with a .400 batting average. Yet it was Arizona’s
Alicia Hollowell who took center stage, pitching a one-hitter in
the final match. Hollowell had pitched a perfect game in
Saturday’s 2-0 semi-final victory over the same team. Bruin
sophomore Jodie Legaspi drove in both of Team USA’s runs with
a two-run double in the fourth running. The back-to-back victories
over Chinese Taipei avenged the team’s only loss in the
tournament, a 3-2 loss during round-robin play.
