Sigma Chi stigma undeserved, unfair

Does anyone else find it amazing that Sigma Chi has gotten so
much attention this past year, let alone during the first week of
school? Sure, they made a few mistakes, but who doesn’t?
I think I know why the Greek system is so determined to give
Sigma Chi a bad name. Maybe they are threatened by the obvious
presence of their brotherhood. Maybe some houses think that if they
can get one of UCLA’s biggest frats kicked off the row their
own houses will get better. Whatever the reason may be, the Sigma
Chi bashing needs to end. It’s time the more important truths
are revealed to the UCLA community.
Let’s get the politics out of the way. Sigma Chi was
originally put on probation for holding a sorority
“keg-off” during their annual Derby Days philanthropy
event. Stupid, you may think ““ I will give you that ““
but did anyone ever research how much money the men were able to
raise for the Children’s Miracle Network? A little under
$3,000.
That’s Sigma Chi’s highest fund-raiser, and Sigma
Chi fund-raising events are some of ““ if not the ““ most
successful on campus. Let’s at least give the men credit
where it’s deserved.
After that fun event, Sigma Chi’s sponsorship by UCLA was
withdrawn due to hazing allegations. First of all, hazing
allegations have been made against many of the houses over the
years. Sigma Chi just happened to be on the hot seat this time.
“How?” and “why?” you may ask. That is
where you need to stop researching because the bonds of their
brotherhood will never release the full story even though it would
be beneficial to them. Just let it suffice to say that in the
process of evaluating the house, the issue got completely blown out
of proportion, and well, you know the results.
Finally, Sigma Chi will fulfill their last requirement when
their resident adviser moves in this week. Sigma Chi had already
established this adviser prior to submitting their application, but
he hadn’t yet moved in because he was waiting for his lease
to expire.
Like I said before, the Sigma Chi bashing needs to come to an
end because the men of Sigma Chi are just genuinely nice guys who
want to have a good time with their friends. I have had classes
with the men for which we have spent hours studying into the wee
hours of the morning, and they have proved themselves to be quite
the intellectuals.
I would, without an ounce of hesitation, set up any one of my
friends with any guy in the house. Sigma Chi members are some of
the most respectable guys I have ever met. I have never heard a
single story from friends or outside sources with regard to any
girls being taken advantage of by any member of Sigma Chi.
My experience with the men of Sigma Chi has been a memorable
one. They have proven to be friends that every girl should be
blessed to have at least once in her life.
The fact is Sigma Chi is simply one of the better houses at UCLA
““ it always has been and it probably always will be. No
matter how many articles get printed about them, no matter how many
bad things may get said, their brotherhood will keep them together.
They have a genuine respect for one another, and that’s not
going away any time soon.
