The men’s and women’s cross country teams will head
to Indiana State University this Saturday for the NCAA Pre-National
Meet. In what will be a crucial day for the Bruins to solidify
their case for an at-large bid come the NCAA Championship Team
Selection, coach Eric Peterson has a specific goal for both of his
squads. “Our goals this weekend are two-fold: running well
against those teams we will battle in our region (such as Stanford,
Arizona State and UCSB on the women’s side, and ASU, Oregon
and Cal Poly-SLO on the men’s side) and defeating as many
nationally top-ranked teams as possible,” he said. Last year,
the women finished fifth in the preliminary meet. Sophomore Alison
Costello will lead the No. 25 Bruins against 15 of the top 30 teams
in the nation. The men’s side will feature a plethora of
potent teams looking to make a statement before the NCAA
Tournament. Out of the top 30 teams in the country, 24 will be on
hand. Led by seniors Jon Rankin and Erik Emilsson, UCLA aims to
improve on last year’s seventh-place finish.

BASKETBALL: Kiki Vandeweghe, a former Bruin
that led the men’s basketball team to a title his senior
year, will join Olympic gold medal diver Pat McCormick in
celebrating the passing of a contract to open a new sporting
facility at California Lutheran University. The 96,000-square-foot
facility and fitness center, which took $24 million to construct,
is expected to be completed in 2006.

FOOTBALL: Wyoming received its fifth verbal
commitment of the fall when California prep quarterback Karsten
Sween cast his lot with the Cowboys. Burroughs High School football
coach Jeff Steinberg said the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Sween made his
decision after visiting the UW campus this past weekend. Sween was
also being recruited by UCLA, Colorado State, Boise State, Fresno
State and Oregon State.
