One current UCLA gymnast and two Bruin alumni have qualified for
Olympic Trials. UCLA sophomore Kate Richardson
finished fifth in the all-around at the Canadian Women’s
Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, and was officially selected
for the Olympic Trials on Sunday. Former UCLA All-American
Mohini Bhardwaj qualified for the U.S.
Women’s Olympic Trials by finishing 12th at the U.S.
Women’s Gymnastics Championships. Bhardwaj also made the U.S.
National Team. Bruin alumnus Steve McCain
qualified for the U.S. Men’s Olympic Trials by finishing
seventh at the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Championships.
Richardson earned a 10.0 on the floor exercise in her first elite
competition since 2002. “I was extremely pleased that Kate
was able to compete with the same confidence that she competed with
in college,” UCLA coach Valorie Kondos Field
said in a statement. “These were her first elite routines
since 2002. She made just one mistake on balance beam. I was
impressed that she was able to maintain her technique on all her
new skills despite not having competed elite skills in two
years.” Kondos Field was Richardson’s coach at the
Gymnastics Championships in Mississauga, Ontario, and received the
Choreography of the Year award for Richardson’s floor
exercise. Richardson was a member of the 2004 NCAA champion UCLA
women’s gymnastics team. The Canadian Women’s
Gymnastics Olympic Trials will take place from July 10-11 in
Toronto. The U.S. Olympic Trials take place from June 24-27 in
Anaheim. It will mark Bhardwaj’s second Olympic Trials.
DIVING: Former UCLA All-American Regan
Gosnell will compete at the U.S. Diving Olympic Trials
starting today and ending Sunday. Gosnell is the first ever female
diver from UCLA to participate in the Olympic Trials, which are
held in St. Louis this year. She will be competing in the
women’s platform event. “I am very excited to have the
opportunity to compete at an event as prestigious as the Olympic
Trial meet,” Gosnell said in a statement. “I am looking
forward to getting out there and putting my best up against the
best in our country and certainly the world.” Gosnell, who
last competed for UCLA in 2003, is one of 21 athletes competing for
11 spots in the Olympics. “I couldn’t be more proud of Regan
and all that she has accomplished during her time as both a student
and an athlete at UCLA,” UCLA diving coach Tom Stebbins said
in a statement.
