Calendar: Film & TV
By Daily Bruin Staff
June 2, 2004 9:00 p.m.
“Starsky & Hutch”
Ackerman Grand Ballroom
Today and Friday, 7:00 and 9:30 p.m. Campus Events’
unofficial Ben Stiller week begins with $2 screenings of this
enjoyable, if uninspired, action-adventure buddy comedy. But the
real star of the film is Snoop Dogg, who takes a fantastic turn as
Huggy Bear. Check out www.campusevents.ucla.edu for more
information. Fo shizzle.
“Seducing Doctor Lewis”
James Bridges Theater
Today, 7:30 p.m. Perhaps the first comedy to win the World
Cinema-Dramatic Award at the Sundance Film Festival, this Canadian
film (in French) tells the story of a small fishing community on a
tiny, impoverished island that must persuade a doctor to live in
their town in order to get a much-needed new factory. Lies quickly
build upon lies as villagers try to convince the doctor that their
island has elements of a larger city that will make his residence
worthwhile. That is, if you consider a lackluster dock a
requirement for a thriving metropolis. Visit

Cinema Italian Style: New Films From Italy (Under the
Sign of Fellini)
Egyptian Theatre
Through June 13 Following its exhaustive retrospective of famed
Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, the American Cinematheque moves
on to the more contemporary world of Italian cinema, showcasing 18
new Italian films, many of which haven’t yet been screened in
Los Angeles. Michael York, who co-starred in Franco Zeffirelli’s
“Romeo and Juliet” (1968), will host opening night
festivities. Check out www.egyptiantheatre.com for more
information.
“Clash of the Titans”
Landmark Nuart Theatre
Friday, midnight Brad Pitt and director Wolfgang Petersen
aren’t the only people in Hollywood guilty of making a
splashy, special effects-driven film based on a popular Greek myth.
But while the technology of 1981 was surely less impressive than it
is today, this film based on the story of Perseus is certainly
worth another look thanks to some brilliant casting choices by
director Desmond Davis. Check out Maggie Smith as Thetis, Ursula
Andress as Aphrodite, and Laurence Olivier as Zeus. (Okay,
“L.A. Law” alumnus Harry Hamlin is Perseus, but
still…)
The 58th Annual Tony Awards
CBS
June 6, 8 p.m. Without a clear front-runner in most categories,
this could be one of the most competitive Tony Awards in recent
memory. Unfortunately, that also means there aren’t any shows
so good you have to watch for the quick performance on air. For the
second year, Hugh Jackman hosts, trying to convince people to watch
people win awards for plays they’ve never heard of. More
information is available at www.cbs.com.
“The Notebook”
Ackerman Grand Ballroom
June 8, 8 p.m. Starring Ryan Gosling and based on the novel by
Nicholas Sparks, this movie can only be described using two words:
chick flick. More important than the question of whether or not the
movie’s any good is the question of how girls are going to
get guys into the theater to watch it. Will the presence of Rachel
McAdams (“Mean Girls”) be enough? Pick up your free
sneak preview pass and find out, and log on to
www.campusevents.ucla.edu for screening details.
