Correcting new requirements In his column
“NCAA reforms can’t be expected to succeed” (May
4), Bruce Tran made a lot of good points, but I do have trouble
sitting still for this one. The one new requirement freshmen now
have as a result of rules changes that go into effect Aug. 1 is
having to have at least a 1.80 grade-point-average entering their
second year. Previously, they had to pass 36 (quarter) units by the
start of their second year, and 27 of those had to be during the
academic year (fall, winter, spring). That hasn’t changed.
The degree progress requirement that was 50 percent after two years
is now 40 percent, but that isn’t until after their second
year.
