Maintaining a voice in state and national issues is vital for
protecting students’ interests. UCLA has been a member in the
University of California Student Association and the United States
Student Association since their respective beginnings. There is no
reason to cease that involvement, especially when the cost of
membership is decreasing.
For these reasons, the Daily Bruin supports the fee
referendum.
Joining with other universities throughout the state and country
dramatically increases students’ potential for effective
lobbying.
This year alone, UCSA worked to defeat Proposition 54 and
successfully halted midyear budget cuts by suing Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger.
In recent years, USSA’s lobbying efforts in Washington,
D.C. have raised the maximum amount given by the Pell Grant program
by $700 and helped pass reauthorization of the Higher Education
Reform Act.
UCLA students cannot afford to lose the collective power of
these organizations ““ and by voting yes this week, will
actually save themselves 50 cents next year.
