Former Justice receives Spirit Award:
Cruz Reynoso, the first member of the Latina/o community to serve
on the Supreme Court and currently a law professor at UC Davis,
received the 2004 César E. Chávez Spirit Award on
Thursday night. In a ceremony held in Covel Commons, Reynoso was
presented the award by Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United
Farm Workers Union and former UC regent. Huerta is a past Spirit
Award recipient. The UCLA César E. Chávez Center for
Interdisciplinary Instruction in Chicano Studies presents the award
each year to distinguished individuals and leaders in the Chicana/o
and Latina/o communities. Past recipients have included playwright
Luis Valdez, actor and activist Martin Sheen and Grammy-winning
musician Carlos Santana.
