Calendar: Film & TV
By Daily Bruin Staff
April 28, 2004 9:00 p.m.
“Envy”
Mann Plaza 2
Today, 10 p.m. In honor of the release of the Ben Stiller-Jack
Black comedy, Dreamworks is hosting a free preview screening, as
well as a pre-show party at Westwood Brewing Company at 8 p.m.
Apparently, you need to be drunk to enjoy it. Pick up your free
passes in 319 Kerckhoff.
“Mystic River”
Ackerman Grand Ballroom
Today and Friday, 7 and 9:30 p.m. As Billy Crystal pointed out at
the Oscars, Clint Eastwood just keeps rollin’ along. His
newest film, which won an Oscar for Sean Penn and UCLA alum Tim
Robbins, was one of the most intense movies of last year, and also
one of the best. Penn’s performance alone makes it worth
seeing, and Robbins is just gravy. Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne,
Marcia Gay Harden and Laura Linney are also present in the all-star
cast. Just don’t expect to smile much. For more information,

Black on Black: The Diabolical Cinema of Henri-Georges
Clouzot
Egyptian Theatre
Friday-May 4 The always-interesting American Cinematheque begins a
nine-film retrospective of French director Henri-Georges
Clouzot’s work with a double feature screening on April 30 of
“The Truth” (“La Verite”), which won the
1961 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, and
“Diabolique,” one of the best psychological thrillers
ever made. Visit www.egyptiantheatre.com for more information,
including ticket prices.
Tribute to Rod Steiger
James Bridges Theater
May 2, 5:30 p.m. To honor the newly established Rod Steiger
scholarships in acting, as well as the late actor himself, the
School of Theater, Film and Television will host a tribute
featuring guest speakers Norman Jewison, Jonathan Winters, Scott
Wilson and Joan Benedict Steiger, as well as a special screening of
“The Pawnbroker” at 7 p.m. It’s all free, and
refreshments will be served. Check out www.tft.ucla.edu for more
information.
FABRICA CINEMA
Italian Cultural Institute
May 3-6, 7:30 p.m. In conjunction with its exhibition
“FABRICA: From Chaos to Order and Back,” the Italian
Cultural Institute will host free screenings of three films
co-produced by FABRICA, a production company devoted to developing
filmmakers from third-world countries, particularly from Africa,
Eastern Europe and the Arab world. “Blackboards” will
screen on May 3, “Secret Ballot” on May 4, and
