Occidental’s student government shut
down

The president of Occidental College shut down the school’s
student government Thursday for the rest of the year, citing
constant infighting and a number of complaints against student
government leaders, according to an article in the Los Angeles
Times.

College officials say the shut-down was prompted by personal
spats and allegations made by student government members over the
course of the year.

Dissent among student government leaders grew as spring
elections ““ now postponed until fall ““ drew near. One
candidate was wrongly accused of a sexual harassment complaint in
voice mail messages left for students, according to the Times.

College officials are currently investigating around 10
students. Penalties for students could range up to expulsion.

The Occidental student government controls a $441,000 budget and
employs about 100 students.
