At least 192 people were killed by terrorist bombs in Spain on
Thursday, marking one of the worst incidents of terrorism since
Sept. 11, 2001.

Authorities are not sure who is responsible for the attack, but
the bombing nonetheless illustrates that terrorists remain a
serious global concern. With such a high death toll, the Madrid
bombings appear similar to other attacks that have occurred since
Sept. 11, 2001, such as the bombings of Bali, Indonesia nightclubs
that killed 202 people.

These attacks represent an especially frightening form of
terrorism where the main goal is to kill and maim as many innocent
people as possible.

Although the United States hasn’t been subject to any
significant terrorist acts since 2001, we must not become
complacent. The fight against terrorism is still a daily
struggle.

But Americans must also remember that terrorism cannot be
defeated with brute strength alone. The U.S. Military could invade
numerous countries and terrorism could still occur. The fight
against terrorism must be a cooperative, global task focusing on
law enforcement and humanitarian efforts.
