Highway 1 From L.A. to S.F.

As any proud California native or the governor could tell you,
an automobile journey up Highway 1 along the state’s coast
yields some of the most breathtaking views. Anywhere. But how many
people have actually made the trip so they can boast about it?

Instead of plowing up I-5 to get to San Francisco as fast as
possible for the millionth time, take your time along Highway 1 and
make that the trip. Not only is it cheaper ““ views are free
““ but you’ll experience something new. Do obey the
speed limits though, as there’s a reason you’re only
supposed to go 15 around some of the rollercoaster twists along
steep cliffsides overlooking the water.

While you drive, be sure to check out towns like Bodega Bay
(where Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” was
filmed), Pismo Beach and Carmel. But they’re all for people
who can afford to pay lots of money to see the water. You can pay a
lot less and be a lot closer to the water by camping at one of the
many sites in the Monterey Bay area. For more information, visit
