WILL Win: “Finding Nemo”

SHOULD Win: “The Triplets of
Belleville”

If the Oscars were decided by a Magic 8-ball ““ and
let’s face it, sometimes it seems like they are ““
“Finding Nemo” would get an “All signs point to
yes” in this category. Not only did everyone and their
mothers (and their mothers’ 5-year-old kids) love this movie,
but “Shrek” won the category for 2001, a year very
similar to 2003 in terms of animated film.

“The Triplets of Belleville” is simply the
“Waking Life” of this year; more difficult to decipher
but visually more interesting, it pushes the field of animation
forward. But it gets no love from an Academy that loves to honor
films that cross multiple demographic boundaries. All hail the
fish, but if someone had to metaphorically fry it, how could it be
anyone but the French?
