WILL Win: Charlize Theron,
“Monster”
SHOULD Win: Keisha Castle-Hughes, “Whale
RIder”
Theron will undoubtedly take home this prize, as the Academy
loves to reward really hot women who make themselves look ugly for
parts. But as opposed to past winners Halle Berry and Nicole
Kidman, who both went uggo for Oscar, Charlize is not a good
actress. Every second she’s on screen, you can tell
she’s acting.
Diane Keaton has a shot with a role that shows women can still
be sexy over a certain age. But if the Academy had any sense, it
would reward Keisha Castle-Hughes who, at 13, is the youngest Best
Actress nominee in Oscar history. “Whale Rider” is a
lovely, lyrical film anchored by a flawless, unassuming performance
from Castle-Hughes as a young Maori girl who must fight her
grandfather’s hatred to reunite her family. It’s
obvious the thought of Oscar never even crossed this young
Kiwi’s mind as she was making this film, and that’s why
she deserves to win.
