M.R.C. Greenwood, the chancellor of UC Santa Cruz, was named the
provost and senior vice president of the University of California,
the second-highest position in the system.
The UC Board of Regents, the UC’s governing body,
appointed Greenwood to the position in a special meeting on Monday.
Greenwood will replace the current provost, C. Judson King, who is
retiring from the position after serving for eight years.
UC President Robert Dynes said Greenwood’s proven
leadership at the Santa Cruz campus should serve the university
well as it faces the challenge of coping with state budget
cuts.
“M.R.C. Greenwood possesses tremendous energy, academic
accomplishment and administrative skill. She brings the perfect
credentials to this position,” he said in a statement.
Though she said she will miss the Santa Cruz campus, Greenwood
said in a statement she was “honored to be called on to help
further work that is so critical to California.”
Greenwood served as UCSC’s chancellor for eight years.
During her tenure there, UCSC expanded in student enrollment and
academic programs, and established two new residential
colleges.
Greenwood also negotiated a partnership between the UC and NASA
in October, which will allow the university to work with NASA at
the proposed NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley.
Greenwood’s promotion makes her the highest-ranking woman
in the university.
King intends to retire to UC Berkeley, where he will become
director of the Center for Studies in Higher Education.
