UCLA freshman Alison Costello won the USA
Junior Women’s Cross Country meet Saturday in Indianapolis.
She ran the 6 km race in 20:55, 11 seconds faster than second place
finisher Kathleen Trotter from Stanford.
The top six finishers earned a place on the U.S. team that will
travel to Brussels, Belgium, to compete in the IAAF World
Championships held March 20-21.
“I was trying to be conservative on the first lap,”
Costello said. “The only girls I recognized were the Trotter
sisters from Stanford, and my goal was to stay with them. I was
trying to work with them and pretended that they were my
teammates.”
Costello’s time perhaps was even more impressive,
considering the weather. Three inches of snow covered the ground on
the track before the race started.
“It was snowing during the race,” coach Eric
Peterson said. “(She) didn’t let the weather
bother her, and she ran like a champion.”
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Former Bruin standout
Matt Barnes’ longest stint in the NBA is
about to get even longer. The Los Angeles Clippers signed the
forward for the remainder of the season Sunday. Barnes had
originally signed a 10-day contract on Jan. 18 and extended the
deal on Jan. 28. NBA rules prohibit a team from using the 10-day
contract more than twice on one player, so the Clippers had a
decision to make.
They chose to keep Barnes, who is averaging 3.7 points and 4.4
rebounds per game on the season. He had a career night against the
Golden State Warriors on Jan. 21, when he recorded 13 points and 11
rebounds for his first career double-double.
LACROSSE: UCLA’s club lacrosse team lost
to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 5-2 Saturday in a game at the North
Athletic Field. The Bruins are now 1-1, and their next game is at
home against Arizona State on Feb. 14.
