Package prompts Federal Building evacuation

A bomb scare on Monday morning forced the evacuation of the
Wilshire Federal Building and closed Wilshire Boulevard for about
an hour.

The evacuation was sparked by the discovery of a suspicious
package outside of the building at about 8 a.m., said Matt
McLaughlin, a spokesman for the FBI. After the building was
evacuated, a sheriff’s bomb squad team arrived and determined
the package was not dangerous.

Wilshire Boulevard was closed until 9 a.m., McLaughlin
added.

Student Activities Center to kick off grand
opening

Today the university will commemorate the formal grand opening
of the Student Activities Center, which has undergone extensive
renovations since 2001, when it was known as the Men’s
Gym.

The center will house many of the campus’s student
organizations, including the Center for Student Programming, which
sponsors a majority of the student groups at UCLA.

The LGBT Resource Center relocated to the SAC in October, but
the rest of the building has not been occupied.

In addition to housing student activities, the center will also
host intramural sports. The role of the building as a gymnasium has
been served ever since the heyday of Bruin basketball, when the
Men’s Gym was the campus venue for men’s basketball
before Pauley Pavilion was constructed.

Reports from Bruin staff.
