As we who live in a media-saturated society all well know, the
passing of each calendar year magically and irrevocably yields
lists of winners and losers. Someone who was firmly in the
“funky-fresh” category last year may find themselves
suddenly sitting dusty on the day-old bread shelf this year. The
calendar is the great divider, forcing anyone or anything that was
hot before Jan. 1 to wonder whether their days are now officially
over.

Now that winter quarter is in full swing, all you busy UCLA
students may find there just isn’t any time left in your
hectic schedules to ruminate over what’s cooler than cool and
what’s now passé. With this in mind, the staff here at
dB Magazine have put our heads together and come up with a few key
“ins” and “outs” to help make the
transition to 2004 a little bit easier. Just a quick glance at
these pages will make even the most culturally unaware student feel
more in the know.

Of course, there will be a few dissenters. No doubt the hundreds
of iPod users easily spotted on campus everyday will have a thing
or two to say in defense of the insular womb of endless music they
love to attach themselves to by means of long, white umbilical
cord-like earphones. And while it might be tough to swallow that it
is, in fact, Mandy Moore’s world, we figured we might as well
admit it and just try to exist alongside her.

So to you, dear readers, we would like to extend a hearty
invitation to voice your opinions on any of these pressing issues,
or submit your ideas about what’s ice cold this year and what
is sooooo last year. Of course, we think we’re right, but
e-mailing the dB Magazine staff, no matter what kind of comments
you might like to make, is one activity that is definitely hip for
2004.
