“La Bohème”
Ahmanson Theatre
Jan. 18 through March 7
Baz Luhrmann is in love with love. The man who brought the world
“Moulin Rouge” wraps a giant bear hug around Giacomo
Puccini’s “La Bohème,” billed as “the
greatest love story ever sung.” Different story, same puddle
of tears. Tickets range from $30 to $120. Call (213) 628-2772 or
visit www.TaperAhmanson.com for reservations.
Jim Sheridan
Writers Guild of America
Jan. 15, 7:30 p.m.
Award-winning and five-time Oscar nominee, writer and director Jim
Sheridan will restart the engine on the Writers on Writing speaker
series, which was in hibernation during the holidays. A key figure
in the renaissance of Irish filmmaking during the 1990s, Sheridan
will no doubt talk about his latest effort, “In
America,” but hopefully touch on “My Left Foot”
and “In the Name of the Father,” two of his best works.
Tickets are $10 for students. Call (323) 782-4692 or visit
www.wgfoundation.org for more information.
“Popular by Demand”
Workmen’s Circle
Now through Feb. 27
Muralist Eladio Alvarez puts a cosmopolitan twist on Mexican folk
art, exploring the dimensions of surrealism. His subjects are
ordinary people whose thankless tasks receive larger-than-life
treatment. Free of charge. Call (310) 552-2007 or visit
www.circlesocal.org for more information.
