Women aim for second Pac-10 win Coming off of
its first conference victory of the season over Oregon, the UCLA
women’s basketball team (6-6, 1-2 Pac-10) will aim to make it
two in a row. The team hosts its first conference game of the year
tonight against Washington State (4-9, 0-4). The Cougars limp into
Pauley Pavilion having lost nine out of their last 10 games, and
they will match up against a Bruin squad that has dominated the
recent series between the two teams. UCLA owns a 28-6 overall
series lead over Washington State, who they have defeated in five
consecutive games. In a season that has been characterized by
inconsistent play thus far, sophomore Nikki Blue has been a staple
of the Bruin attack, leading the team in scoring (15.3 points per
game) and assists (5 per game). Freshman Noelle Quinn also provides
a spark offensively, coming off two solid performances against
Oregon State and Oregon in which she scored 16 and 12 points,
respectively. However, Quinn is still recovering from a stress
fracture in her right foot that she suffered Dec. 13 against
Purdue. UCLA, whose 4-1 record at home is one of its few bright
spots so far this season, will also host Pac-10 power Washington
(8-5, 1-3) this Sunday. The Huskies lead the all-time series
against the Bruins 24-12. In their last meeting on Feb. 1,
Washington squashed UCLA 111-77 in Seattle despite Blue’s 35
points, a Bruin freshman record.
WOMEN’S RUGBY: The UCLA women’s
rugby team opens its season Saturday at 11 a.m. as the Bruins host
Occidental. Women’s rugby is a club sport at UCLA. The Bruins
compete in the Southern California Women’s Rugby Union, a
league of six teams from Southern California and Arizona.
