M.polo: Water polo sweeps opponents

The UCLA men’s water polo team swept its opponents over
the weekend, beating UC Irvine 10-7 on Saturday and Long Beach
State 12-7 on Sunday.

Junior driver Brett Ormsby scored nine goals over the weekend,
helping the team improve to 17-5 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF, with
only two games left on the schedule.

“That was the best weekend he’s had in a couple of
weeks,” coach Adam Krikorian said. “That was good to
see. Any time we play a game, the other opponents are putting in a
lot of energy to try to shut (Brett) down. He’s a good enough
player where he can convert opportunities on his team.”

In the Bruins’ last loss (6-4 to Stanford on Nov. 1), the
team got off to a bad start and allowed five goals in the first
quarter.

The Bruins got off to a slow start again on Sunday, trailing 2-1
after the first quarter, but this time the results were very
different, as UCLA scored five goals in the second quarter compared
to Long Beach State’s one.

“I thought we were doing some good things in the first
quarter,” Krikorian said. “The only difference was we
were executing, we shot the ball well in the second quarter. We
converted on a 6-on-5 goal, that got us started. We were using our
legs very well and were very accurate.”

UCLA, USC and Stanford are all tied in the MPSF standings with
only one MPSF game remaining for each.
