Women’s volleyball vies for higher Pac-10
spot The UCLA women’s volleyball team will travel to
Arizona for a pair of matches against Arizona and Arizona State on
Thursday and Friday, respectively. Behind the strength of their
six-match win streak, the Bruins (19-4, 10-3 Pac-10) are currently
ranked No. 6 nationally, the highest they have been all season.
With California and Stanford playing each other over the weekend,
UCLA has a chance to break loose of the three-way tie for third
place in the Pac-10 with two victories against the Wildcats (11-12,
5-7) and Sun Devils (8-13, 3-9). But the Arizona schools have
bedeviled the Bruins in recent meetings. UCLA lost both meetings on
the road last season, and Arizona beat the Bruins in Pauley
Pavilion earlier this season, a victory where the Wildcats picked
up their first conference win. In that meeting, Arizona outside
hitter Kim Glass romped to a 24 kill on .333
hitting, while her opposite, Jennifer Abernathy,
had 13 (.276) in a dominating 3-1 Wildcats victory. In fact,
Abernathy was recently named both Pac-10 and National Player of the
Week after 24 kills in an upset win over then-ranked No. 6 Cal.
After starting the season 0-5 in the Pac-10, Arizona has won five
out of their last seven conference matches.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Three former Bruins are
members the EA Sports All-Stars, an exhibition team that travels
the nation. Ray Young, Matt
Barnes and Ed O’Bannon led EA
Sports in a 107-77 loss to Pepperdine on Tuesday. Young led all
scorers with 20 points, Barnes had 15 points and 7 rebounds, and
O’Bannon grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 12
points. UCLA will open its season Nov. 11 against EA Sports. The
Bruins lost their game against EA Sports last year, 70-64 in Pauley
Pavilion.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Pepperdine defeated
Love and Basketball 93-91 Nov. 1 in Malibu. Love and Basketball
features five former UCLA players, including Michelle
Greco, Natalie Nakase, Janae
Hubbard, Marie Philman and Jalina
Bradley. Greco, Nakase and Bradley were all on last
season’s Bruin squad. It will be a near homecoming of sorts
when Love and Basketball comes to Pauley Pavilion to take on the
Bruins Nov. 8.
PAC-10 FOOTBALL: California quarterback
Aaron Rodgers, Cal linebacker Michael
Craven and Stanford punt returner Aaron
Powell were named the Bank of America Higher Standards
Pac-10 Football Players of the Week. Both teams won their games
over the weekend.
