UCLA senior defensive end Dave Ball has been
named one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Lombardi award, given
to the nation’s best lineman. Ball leads the nation with 11.5
sacks on the season and leads the Pac-10 with 15.5 tackles for
loss. Other notables up for the award come from three undefeated
teams: Oklahoma’s Tommie Harris and
Teddy Lehman, Miami’s Jonathan
Vilma and Kellen Winslow, and Texas
Christian’s Bo Schobel.
MEN’S GOLF: Four members of the No.1 UCLA
men’s golf team competed individually at the Santa Clara
Invitational, hosted by the Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San
Jose on Tuesday. Freshman Chris Heintz finished
tied for second in the 52-player field with a one-over-par 217, one
stroke behind Santa Clara’s Chris Ahasic.
Freshman Peter Campbell tied for ninth place,
freshman Joakim Renstrom tied for 11th and
sophomore Breene Murphy tied for 21st. Santa Clara
beat the University of San Francisco by seven strokes.
MEN’S SOCCER: Washington junior forward
Brett Wiesner was named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Tuesday. The award took into account all games played from Oct. 21
to Oct. 27. During this time, Wiesner and the
Huskies played one game ““ a 1-0 win over Gonzaga on Saturday,
in which Wiesner scored the game-winning goal.
Also nominated for the award was UCLA’s freshman forward
Chad Barrett.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: California junior
outside hitter Mia Jerkov was named Pac-10 Player
of the Week on Monday for the week of Oct. 20.
Jerkov had 52 kills combined in Cal wins at
Washington and Washington State over the weekend.
