UCLA senior outside hitter Natalie Ray underwent surgery Monday
to remove a rib that was impinging on her artery, causing the
multiple blood clots that developed in her right arm and shoulder
area Oct. 6. It appears her UCLA career is “more than
likely” over, according to coach Andy Banachowski. “It
would be dangerous to play her,” Banachowski said. At first,
doctors tried blood thinning medications to clear up the clots, but
once Ray was off the medication they re-emerged. Ray appeared in 23
games this year, mostly as a serving specialist, after playing in
only 22 games during the past two seasons. While she does have a
redshirt year available, Ray is expected to graduate in June.

JOHNSON TO REDSHIRT: Freshman outside hitter
Rachell Johnson will likely redshirt the season due to a broken
finger in her right hand. She sustained that injury in practice
Aug. 24 and has already missed more than half the season. “We
want to give Rachell a full year to play,” Banachowski said.
Johnson has been suiting up for matches with her right hand heavily
wrapped, and she has seen some action. Before Saturday’s
match against Arizona State, she came to the rescue of national
anthem singer, who paused twice while trying to remember the words.
Johnson, who sang the anthem for the team’s home opener this
past month, stood by the singer’s side and helped her pull
through.

A FAMILY AFFAIR: Freshman outside hitter Colby
Lyman is looking forward to an interesting Saturday as her brother,
Chase Lyman, and the rest of the Cal football team travel to the
Rose Bowl to face UCLA. Lyman said she is planning to drive back
down to Westwood with Chase following Friday’s volleyball
match at Cal. Chase, a junior wide receiver, will not play in the
game due to an ankle injury. “It’s going to be a lot
easier rooting for the Bruins,” Lyman said.
