Natalie Ray will not be with the UCLA
women’s volleyball team this weekend. The senior outside
hitter/defensive specialist was hospitalized earlier in the week to
treat multiple blood clots in her right arm and shoulder area.
“She had a procedure Tuesday to try and break up the blood
clots, and she is being evaluated again this evening to determine
whether they dissipated,” coach Andy Banachowski said. At
this time, it is unclear how the blood clots developed. It is
probable that Ray will be released from a nearby hospital on
Friday. Her prognosis is very good at the moment. She has been
visited by nearly her entire team, and her mother is currently with
her. “I think almost the entire team was down there at one
time or another,” Banachowski said. “I was down there
yesterday, she was in good spirits.” MEN’S
BASKETBALL: Malik Hairston, perhaps the nation’s top
prep small forward, has not been complimentary to UCLA since his
official visit to Westwood on Aug. 30. The Renaissance High
(Detroit) senior criticized the current Bruins’ work ethic in
a pick-up game at Pauley Pavilion in his online diary on
HoopMasters.com. “During the games at UCLA, the older guys
were too laid back,” Hairston said. “All the incoming
recruits were running all over the current squad. They just
didn’t play hard.” The 6-foot-5 Hairston has removed
UCLA from the list of schools he’s considering. He’s
still looking at Ohio State, Kentucky and Michigan among others.
“¢bull;”¢bull;”¢bull; One of UCLA’s top forward recruits,
Maarty Leunen, verbally committed to Oregon on
Wednesday. The 6-foot-7-inch athlete is a native of Oregon.
MEN’S SOCCER: Dru Hoshimiya was selected
to Soccer America’s Team of the Week. Hoshimiya scored in the
No.1 Bruins’ 2-1 victory over Oregon State and then led the
UCLA defense to a 1-0 shutout against No. 13 Washington.
