After coming off a victory in the Big Wave Invitational in
Honolulu last Saturday, the No. 18 UCLA women’s cross country
team will participate in the 30th annual Stanford Invitational held
in Palo Alto this Saturday. The meet traditionally brings some of
the toughest competition in the country in both men’s and
women’s cross country. The course length is 6,000 meters.
Running for the Bruins are seniors Valerie Flores
and Melissa McBain, as well as juniors
Carmen Winant and Carolyn Shea.
The team is pinning its hopes on sophomore Jenna
Timinsky and freshman Ashley Caldwell.
Noticeably absent from the lineup is sophomore Alejandra
Barrientos, who placed seventh overall and helped UCLA
take third in last year’s invitational.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY: The men will also be
participating in the Stanford Invitational. The squad also took
first in the Big Wave Invitational for the second consecutive
season. The competition in Stanford, however, will be much
improved. Also running in the invitational are No. 1 Stanford, No.
2 Wisconsin, No. 4 Arkansas, as well as conference rival
California. The course length will be 8,000m. Last season junior
Ben Aragon led the team to a seventh place finish,
placing 38th overall individually. Junior Erik
Emilsson will also be counted on to run in the No. 2
spot.
WOMEN’S GOLF: No. 13 UCLA will compete in
the Mason Rudolph Championship today and tomorrow at the Legends
Club in Franklin, Tenn. The tournament, hosted by Vanderbilt, will
feature 10 of the nation’s top 50 teams. UCLA’s lineup
will include junior All-American Charlotte
Mayorkas and seniors Gina Umeck and
Bridget Dwyer.
PAC-10 SOCCER: The No. 21 Stanford women
defeated San Francisco 6-1 Wednesday night in Palo Alto. Senior
Allyson Marquandscored three minutes into the
match for the Cardinal (4-3-1), and the rout was on. “¢bull; The
No. 13 Santa Clara women will host No. 23 USC Friday. “¢bull; The
No. 12 California women will travel to Colorado Springs this
weekend to take on Wake Forest and Colorado College.
PAC-10 VOLLEYBALL: No. 1 USC will host Oregon
State tonight at the Lyon Center. The heavily favored Trojans will
then face Oregon on Saturday.
