Council supports same-sex marriage
The undergraduate student government passed a resolution in
support of same-sex marriage at its meeting Tuesday night.
The resolution states that “(the Undergraduate Students
Association Council) shall vigorously support legislation that
benefits the (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender)
community.”
Internal Vice President Allende Palma Saracho said USAC passed
the resolution because the ability to “express one’s
love for one another should not be questioned.”
The resolution was passed two weeks before UCLA’s National
Coming Out Week 2003 Celebration. In an effort to promote awareness
of same-sex marriages, there will be a marriage on campus Friday
between two people of the same gender.
The resolution passed with the support of all USAC members
except General Representative Josh Lawson, who voted in
dissent.
Lawson said he respected homosexual people but believed
homosexual love was not comparable to heterosexual marriage. He
added that there should have been more discussion on the council
table.
Overall, Palma Saracho believes the resolution shows that USAC
is “supportive of the LGBT community and supportive of
everyone’s lifestyle.”
