UCLA wins Lexus Gauntlet Trophy

For the first time in the competition’s two-year history,
UCLA won the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy over USC.

The trophy is awarded annually to the combined winner of all
college athletic events between UCLA and USC.

The final score was 55-55, but the Bruins won on
tiebreakers.

Four sports ““ football, men’s basketball,
women’s basketball and women’s volleyball ““ are
worth ten points a piece while the other 14 sports in the
competition are worth five points each.

The head-to-head winners in each sport take all of the points,
and if the teams split in a sport, the points are split.

In sports like golf and cross-country that don’t meet head
to head, the results of the Pac-10 Championships are used.

The first tiebreaker was overall head-to-head matches between
the two schools, but both schools won 16 rivalry games, forcing a
second tiebreaker ““ head-to-head postseason matches.

The Bruins went 4-0 in that category with wins in men’s
tennis, women’s soccer and men’s and women’s
water polo.

Bohlander, Willis earn Pac-10 medals

UCLA football player Bryce Bohlander and gymnast Onnie Willis
were named Pac-10 Conference Medal winners.

A male and female athlete from each Pac-10 school is given a
conference medal based on a combination of performance and
achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Bohlander, a senior offensive tackle, has started the last 38
games for the Bruins. He was second-team all Pac-10 and earned
UCLA’s Robinson Award for highest scholarship by a
senior.

Willis won the gymnastics Honda Award, an award given to the top
athlete in the sport, and won three national championships while at
UCLA.

In 2001 and 2002, Willis won the all-around individual NCAA
Championship, and was the 2003 Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year.

The winners will be honored at a luncheon in conjunction with
the men’s basketball Pac-10 tournament in March.
