New student support group needs name
The UCLA Sports Marketing Association has been developing a
student support group that, similar to the “Sixth Man”
at Stanford and “The Bench” at Cal, in hopes to provide
a unified, vocal student cheer section at football and basketball
games.
But they need a name.
Some of the ideas that have been tossed around so far are
“Bruin Den,” “Bruin Roar” and “Bruin
Battalion.”
The group wants to adopt a general name that works for both
football and basketball events.
Suggestions can be e-mailed to [email protected].
Throwers to compete in Salinas today
Selected throwers of the UCLA track and field team will compete
in the Salinas Throwers Invite today at Hartnell College.
Traditionally, this meet has resulted in personal records for
UCLA athletes, especially in the discus. Though the invite normally
produces good results, low athlete participation in the event has
made the results unusable for regional qualifications.
The top Bruin competitors are 2003 Pac-10 winners junior Dan
Ames (shot put and discus), junior Cari Soong (hammer) and
sophomore Jessica Cosby (shot put).
Men’s coach Art Venegas will travel with a throwing squad
that includes senior Chaniqua Ross, senior Scott Wiegand, freshman
Jeremy Silverman, junior Lara Saye and sophomore Briona
Reynolds.
