Ariza clears final hurdle, qualifies with SAT
score

Trevor Ariza, the top men’s basketball recruit from the
fall signing class, has received a qualifying score on his
Scholastic Aptitude Test and is now academically eligible to play
for UCLA in 2003-2004.

Ariza averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three
steals a game for state champion Westchester (Los Angeles) High
School. He signed his national letter of intent with UCLA last
November.

A 6-foot-9-inch small forward, Ariza is ranked 14th among U.S.
prep basketball players by Rivals.com.

The Bruins’ highest-ranked recruit of 2002-2003, Evan
Burns, was declared academically ineligible by the NCAA and did not
play for UCLA. He was later reinstated and allowed to play with San
Diego State.

The Bruins’ other incoming recruit from the fall class,
Villa Park High’s Sean Phaler, may play elsewhere after head
coach Ben Howland told him last Tuesday he would not see
significant playing time in 2003-2004.

Men’s soccer lands Litchford

The Orlando Sentinel reported Sunday that Chris Litchford, an
All-American goalkeeper from Boone (Fl.) High School, has committed
to UCLA.

In addition to recording nine shutouts and 185 saves on the
field, the senior Litchford was class valedictorian.
