Justin Schreiber has a vision: to bring back UCLA’s
commitment to community service. We endorse Schreiber for Community
Service commissioner because he is the perfect candidate for making
this vision a reality.

Schreiber’s practical ideas for implementing his vision
are numerous. He plans on reaching out to the various on- and
off-campus community service groups and facilitating co-programming
that will lead to higher levels of student involvement.

One program Schreiber will pursue is a large-scale, community
service event aimed at recruiting student volunteers. During this
one-day event, students will have the opportunity to make a short,
easy commitment to doing community service by engaging in a small
project like cleaning up a beach, cleaning Westwood, or visiting a
retirement center. Schreiber hopes this will give students a taste
for community service and entice them into making longer-term
commitment.

Schreiber is interested to involving UCLA faculty and
administration in community service opportunities as well. This
large-scale recruitment directed at different sectors of the UCLA
community will help re-emphasize community service as an important
element of our university’s mission ““ as per its
commitment to “academics, research and service.”

Schreiber proves he’s a dedicated leader by recognizing
that many of the community service projects dependent on funding
from the Campus Activities Committee may face a lack of necessary
financial resources. To mitigate this disadvantage, Schreiber has
pledged to help individual project directors find alternative forms
of funding, both on and off campus, to add to the allotment they
receive from CAC.

Schreiber’s idea to coordinate communication between the
community service organizations through a local conference is
excellent. By having community service organizations work with each
other, Schreiber hopes they will learn from one another’s
strengths.

Schreiber does not confine his role to interacting with
volunteers. By conducting question and answer sessions, Schreiber
plans to interact with the general student body in an effort to
gauge student opinion on controversial issues. While Schreiber will
consider student opinion in voting on council, his own, individual
analysis of the issues will dictate his votes.
