Vincent, golfers collect conference
accolades
If Christmas is the season of giving, then spring is the season
of receiving.
The long list of accolades awarded to both the men’s and
women’s golf teams continues to grow as a result of their
successful seasons.
After UCLA’s most successful season in quite some time, in
which it won six out of 12 tournaments, it was no surprise that
men’s golf head coach O.D. Vincent was named Pac-10 coach of
the year on Thursday.
“It’s a great honor,” Vincent said. “But
it’s a result of your players playing well.”
Vincent also won the award in 1999 as the head golf coach at the
University of Washington. Vincent joins Randy Lein as one of only
two men to have won coach of the year honors at two different
Pac-10 schools.
The successful seasons of UCLA juniors Steve Conway and John
Merrick were capped off by the announcement that they had each
received First-Team All-Pac-10 honors.
Conway won two individual tournaments this season, the first two
of his collegiate career, and had the lowest scoring average on the
team.
“Steve has proven he is one of the best players in the
country,” Vincent said. “His expectations are pretty
high, as well as they should be.”
Junior Roy Moon was named to the All-Pac-10 Second Team and
redshirt junior Travis Johnson earned Honorable Mention.
Pac-10 honors four women’s golfers
For the women’s team, sophomore Charlotte Mayorkas was
named to the All-Pac-10 First Team. Mayorkas, currently the
No. 8 golfer in the country, set school records for lowest
individual round and best 54-hole score this season.
Freshman Susie Mathews earned Second-Team All-Pac-10 honors, and
juniors Hana Kim and Gina Umeck received Honorable Mentions.
MPSF women’s water polo honors
announced
Senior center defender Robin Beauregard and center forward
Natalie Golda were named to the All-MPSF Tournament Team in
recognition of their performance last weekend.
The duo led UCLA to the championship game of the tournament,
where the Bruins ultimately fell to Stanford 3-2 in a lengthy five
overtime duel.
Golda and Beauregard were also named to the All-MPSF First Team
earlier in the week. This is the fourth year in a row that
Beauregard has earned this honor.
Senior goaltender Jaime Hipp earned second team honors while
fellow seniors Jessica Lopez and Maureen Flanagan were named to the
third team.
