Irresponsible drinking selfish
It was refreshing to see a male college student, Adir Levy,
arguing against irresponsible drinking in “Getting drunk for
fun not worth potential risks” (April 23).
While I agree that you have the right to treat your body however
you like, I consider his generalization of those who won’t
drink excessively as living “quiet, fearful lives”
ridiculous.
But when you won’t consider those around you by
embarrassing your family at your cousin’s wedding, by
wrecking another car on the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica, or
by beating your significant other (the list goes on and on),
that’s when you’re being selfish and immature.

Sizgorich makes poor argument
I enjoyed reading Rachael Sizgorich’s article, “Mental
illness not just a fact of life for women” (April 24). It’s
refreshing to see that the arguments that have been played to death
in Ms. Magazine for years can still be published anew in the Daily
Bruin.
There are, however, a few holes in Sizgorich’s story.
First off, Lizzy Borden was a real person, who committed a real
double-murder with a real axe.Â
Accordingly, female mental instability is more an accurate
portrayal of empirical facts than a sinister plot to subjugate
women.
While I don’t doubt that a woman’s killing or
otherwise injuring a man (or woman for that matter) in a fit
of insane rage will face mitigated prosecution, these
statutes are part of broader provocation and emotional
distress laws that have been common for centuries and apply to
both women and men.
Sizgorich’s arguments must be accurate and complete in
order to be effective.
