Cal State Fullerton basketball head coach Donny Daniels told
FOXSports.com Thursday night that he had accepted UCLA’s
offer to become an assistant coach.
“It was just something I couldn’t pass up,”
Daniels told FOXSports.com. “How do you not take an
opportunity to work at UCLA?”
The Titan athletic department had confirmed Wednesday that talks
had taken place about Daniels joining Howland’s staff.
In his three years at the helm for Fullerton, Daniels went
20-64, including a 10-19 finish last season. His first two seasons
were mired by NCAA sanctions that were placed on the program before
Daniels was hired.
Prior to his three years at Fullerton, Daniels was the top
assistant coach at Utah under Rick Majerus. Daniels can be a boost
to the program because of his West Coast recruiting ties. He was
instrumental in bringing All-Americans Andre Miller and Keith Van
Horn to Utah.
Daniels will join a coaching staff that includes Ernie Ziegler,
who was an assistant coach under Howland at Pittsburgh. Ziegler was
hired Monday afternoon.
The UCLA Athletic Department could not be reached for comment
Thursday night.
