Oral pill may effectively treat PMS A UCLA
study found that the physical and emotional symptoms associated
with a woman’s menstrual cycle were significantly reduced in
women who were taking an oral contraceptive called Yasmin. Yasmin
contains a combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, which
was shown in a study of nearly 700 women to effectively reduce
menstrual-related symptoms. Participants in the study reported
being better able to perform daily activities after starting
therapy. They also reported an improvement in their general sense
of well-being during their menstrual cycle. After starting therapy,
the number of women reporting that PMS affected their daily
activities was cut nearly in half (from 30 percent to 16 percent).
Dr. Andrea J. Rapkin, a UCLA professor of obstetrics and
gynecology, authored the study. The study was designed and
performed by Zynx Life Sciences, and it was sponsored by Berlex
Laboratories Inc., which makes Yasmin. Rapkin is a participant in
the Berlex speaker’s bureau and discusses Yasmin with other
physicians.
