Losses don’t count for Bruins doubles teams at La Jolla

The UCLA men’s tennis team got a break from its tough
schedule this weekend, as the only competitive play the team
participated in took place in the 114th Pacific Coast Doubles
Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

The tournament, which is not sanctioned by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) and therefore doesn’t count against
players’ records, featured a mix of college, junior and local
competitors.

The Bruin players fared reasonably well over the course of the
tournament, as three doubles teams made it into the round of 16
before bowing out.

The team of Tobias Clemens and Chris Lam eventually lost to San
Diego State’s Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, 6-2,
6-3.

UCLA’s No. 1 doubles team of Rodrigo Grilli and Marcin
Matkowski was defeated 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, by Shuon Madden and Ryan
Newport, two non-collegiate competitors.

Erfan Djahangiri and Alberto Francis were defeated by
Pepperdine’s Diego Acuna and Calle Hansen, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Two Bruin freshmen were impressive after losing their first
match in the round of 64. The team of Aaron Yovan and Chris Surapol
won eight straight matches in the consolation bracket to advance to
the finals.

The entire Bruin team returns to action Wednesday when Virginia
visits the Los Angeles Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
