While South Campus UCLA Parking employees earned their paychecks
shuffling visiting motorists toward Pauley Pavilion, the UCLA
men’s lacrosse team treated a spattering of fans to an
overtime thriller Saturday in North Campus.

But despite four goals from senior Tillman Endsley, the Bruins
couldn’t deliver a victory, losing to conference rival UCSD,
8-7.

“It’s a disappointing loss, but it was a great
effort,” Endsley said. “Especially by
Patrick.”

Patrick Chung sent the game into overtime with a steal and
breakaway goal with the Bruins down 7-6 and 40 seconds remaining in
the game.

“It was an open field, and the ball just came to
me,” Chung said about the goal. “I was thinking,
“˜Don’t mess up; it’s really important, just put
(the ball) in the back of the net.'”

UCLA (1-3 in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League) then lost
the opening face-off in overtime and never got the ball back, as
UCSD’s Ross Stensrud scored the game-winner 56 seconds into
the sudden death period.

For the Tritons, it was their first win of the young season, but
going into the game “we knew they were going to beat us
up,” said Chung.

UCLA scored the first three goals of the game on shots from
Endsley, Will Jun (fourth of the season) and John Andrews (first).
But the Bruin advantage didn’t last past the second quarter,
and the game saw four lead changes before the end.

Tillman’s final goal, his eighth of the season, came with
a man advantage in the third period and put UCLA up 6-4. Minutes
later, Tillman was knocked out of the game on an illegal body check
and didn’t return until the fourth quarter.

He looked fatigued the rest of the way while UCSD crept back,
taking a 7-6 lead into the final minute before Chung’s tying
goal.
