Men’s track finishes first, women’s second
at MPSF indoor finals
The UCLA men’s track and field team scored an upset
victory Saturday at the MPSF indoor finals in Boise, Idaho. Six
first-place finishes allowed the unranked Bruins to hold off No. 6
Stanford 127.5-99.
Freshman Craig Everhart (47.68 seconds in the 400-meters),
sophomore Nick Thornton (1:51.13 in the 800m), the distance mile
relay team (9:52.75), sophomore Juane Armon (25 feet, 1.25 inches
in the long jump), senior Scott Wiegand (65-3.25 in the shot put)
and junior Dan Ames (67-9.25 in the 35-lb. weight throw) each
placed first.
The No. 6 women’s team, meanwhile, narrowly finished
second to No. 7 Stanford, 171-161.5. Five women finished first:
sophomore Candace Baucham in the long jump and triple jump (19-6.25
and 42-2.75, respectively), sophomore Monique Henderson in the 200m
(23.72), junior Lena Nilsson in the 800m (2:05.15) and junior
Sheena Johnson in the 60m hurdles (8.29).
Women’s tennis splits two close
finishes
Whether it’s the parity in women’s college tennis or
a love of nail-biters, UCLA’s women’s tennis team
can’t seem to escape the 4-3 result, for better or worse.
A 4-3 loss to Arizona State Friday followed by a victory of the
same margin over Arizona on Saturday brought the Bruins streak of
4-3 results to eight.
At Arizona State, the Bruins lost the doubles point despite a
win from freshmen Jackie Carleton and Susi Wild. Sara Walker and
Lauren Fisher, and Laura Gordon and Sarah Gregg lost to clinch the
doubles point for the Sun Devils.
Walker was forced to retire in the first set of her singles
match against Adria Engel due to injury while UCLA’s Jackie
Carleton outlasted 39th ranked Dora Krstulovic, 2-6, 6-2, 4-3, Ret.
injury, at No. 2 singles.
Wild and Gregg put UCLA ahead with commanding 6-4, 6-2 singles
victories. But Lauren Colalillo’s come-from-behind victory
over Gordon 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and Burkett’s 7-5, 6-4 win over
Anya Loncaric at the No. 6 position put the Sun Devils over the
top.
The next day the Bruins get swept in doubles, mustering only a
total of 11 games in all three sets. But they battled to take four
singles matches, with three going three sets. Loncaric’s 6-3,
6-3 victory over Kelly Perry was the only straight set win of the
match for the Bruins.
Neither match counted toward the Pac-10 standings, but both
opponents will travel to UCLA next month when the results will
count.
