Face Off: Government already enacts morality in laws

Abortion is wrong, and it is the government’s job to
outlaw abortion. Abortion is not only morally wrong, but the
arguments of abortion rights proponents are illogical. The
government should outlaw abortion because not only does abortion
break the law of life but also the laws of logic.

Most liberals frown upon the thought of the government
legislating on moral issues. Abortion rights advocates say,
“If you’re opposed to abortion, don’t have one,
but don’t try to impose your morality on others.”

This is hypocritical of abortion rights supporters since they
are imposing a morality of their own: they impose morality on the
government, saying the government should not impose morality on
others. And since they are imposing their own morality, what right
do they have to argue against the government invading on moral
issues? The abortion rights advocates are telling the government,
“You cannot tell me what to do, but I can tell you what not
to do.”

Abortion rights advocates argue that we each have different
morals and we should not impose them on others, but this is an
absurd idea because we follow unspoken morals everyday. We know it
is wrong to murder and steal and expect everyone else to follow
these morals. This is imposing morals on others. If people were to
break into our house, steal everything inside, and kill our family
members no one would say it was OK because they followed their own
morals.

If everyone followed their own morals people would not be able
to contest someone imposing their morals on them. Without an
imposition of morals, one cannot judge what is wrong because they
do not have a standard, or in other words, a law.

Therefore, it is necessary for the government to intervene on
issues of morality, like abortion, because we need a law to abide
by. The government imposes morality whenever it passes a law.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a “moral”
is a standard of right and wrong. Laws punish citizens for doing
things the government deems “wrong.” If abortion rights
advocates are against morals in general, then they are against laws
as well. They cannot consistently advocate a law for abortion to be
legalized while opposing the moral laws passed by the government.
Those who support abortion rights may argue that the law is biased.
But in essence, most laws are biased because a law judges what is
right or wrong and cannot appease both sides.

Abortion rights advocates appeal to a system they say they are
against. They oppose government intervention on morals, yet they
want one of their morals to be enacted as a law. This is like a
person opposing mathematic principles but using those principles to
solve a math problem.

Every great political movement calls for the government to
invade on moral issues: movements like the fight against slavery,
women’s right to vote and the civil rights movement. The
philosophies behind each movement were based on morals that each
person had, calling for the government to enact laws to serve their
interest, or their morals: freedom for all, women should have equal
rights, and equality for all races. Not only is every movement
based on morals, but it also calls for government intervention,
which are two things abortion rights supporters oppose.

The government needs to become more involved in abortion and
other issues of morality. Abortion rights advocates do not hold a
logical argument for their case against the government;
anti-abortion government intervention is the only action that makes
sense.
