UCLA falls to Beavers in Oregon
The top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team suffered its first major
setback of the season on Friday evening in Corvallis, Ore. The
meeting was the second of the season between UCLA and Oregon State,
but was not reminiscent of the Bruins’ season opening victory
over the Beavers in Hawaii.
The final score of 195.75-195.475 marked the first time the
Bruins had trailed all night; unfortunately, it was the only score
that mattered.
During the final rotation, the previously 13th-ranked Beavers
made a strong showing on floor, while UCLA faltered on beam.
Despite their recent success on the beam, the Bruins were forced
to count a fall and team total of 48.1, their lowest beam score of
the season.
Peña leads Bruins to win over UCSD
The UCLA men’s volleyball team earned its first MPSF
conference victory of the season Saturday night as it defeated UC
San Diego 3-1 at Pauley Pavilion.
The No. 3 Bruins (4-3, 1-2) were lead by quick hitter Chris
Peña in their 30-28, 30-24, 28-30, 31-29 victory. The junior
registered a career-high 21 kills and six block assists.
The Tritons (2-4, 0-2) were led by Jim Waller’s 20 kills,
but the Bruins out-hit UCSD .397 to .314.
Sophomore quick hitter Paul Johnson and sophomore outside hitter
Jonathan Acosta contributed 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
