Henderson earns two golds at world
competition
Monique Henderson became the second Bruin to win an individual
world junior championship title Friday, winning the 400-meter dash
in 51.10 seconds in Kingston, Jamaica.
Henderson, who begins her sophomore season in 2003, ran a
neck-and-neck race with teammate Sanya Richards, who finished in
51.49.
“I just tried to run with (Sanya) and get her in the last
hundred,” said Henderson.
Henderson also won gold for her running with the 4×400-meter
relay team. Henderson and fellow collegians Christina Hardeman,
Tiffany Ross and Leshinda Demus finished in 3:29.95.
The only other Bruin to win an individual World Juniors title
was Shakedia Jones (1998-01), who won the 100-meter dash in
1998.
The World Junior Championships are open to the best track and
field athletes in the 14-19 age class from around the world.
Sealy to replace Speraw as men’s volleyball
coach
Mike Sealy, an All-American Bruin setter (1990-93), was named
assistant men’s volleyball coach July 19. Sealy was chosen to
replace John Speraw, who was named head coach of UC Irvine July
9.
Sealy was a volunteer assistant for the Bruins last season and
Cal State Northridge in 2001.
“Mike Sealy has been playing professionally since 1993,
and he has established himself as one of the premier setters in the
world,” head coach Al Scates said.
“He is embarking on his coaching career and we feel
he’ll be able to expertly train our young setters and hone
senior starter Rich Nelson’s skills next season.”
Sealy played professionally for several years in Switzerland,
Belgium, Holland and Puerto Rico.
