“˜Best years of life’ will make for good stories

By Daily Bruin Staff

June 9, 2002 9:00 p.m.

Christina Teller Teller served as a Sports
assistant editor and staff writer.

I’m going to miss a lot of things about college when I
graduate.

But what I won’t miss is arriving late for a class in
Public Policy even after practically sprinting the whole way there.
Or the year I was an assistant sports editor at the Daily Bruin,
when I spent 80 percent of my days in 118 Kerckhoff, with the rest
of my time divided between sleeping, eating and trying to stay
awake in lecture. And certainly not the hours I
spent hopelessly trying to convince Dylan Hernandez of
anything.

What I will miss are 2 a.m. talks with my
roommates in the hallway during my freshman year in Hedrick. The
nights we made $14 Diddy Riese runs. The times that three of us
would use the same ID to get into a bar on the same night and the
countless road trips up to Santa Barbara.

There were times I couldn’t understand why people say
college years are the best of your life ““ but more often I
knew exactly what they were talking about.

When else do you and your roommates crowd around the
refrigerator playing the “guess what’s in this
container” game, or build a cardboard contraption outside
your kitchen door to keep a mouse from getting anywhere else in the
apartment.

Only in college would you fly home from the East Coast in the
middle of the night after covering the NCAA basketball tournament,
only to take two finals the next morning ““ or go to a Dodgers
game with a group of Giants fans and cheer so much that you leave
with a mixture of salsa and nacho cheese splattered on your clothes
courtesy of the belligerent Dodgers fans.

And what I’ve learned from all of my college experiences
is that no matter what happens ““ it will always make a good
story later.
