Facilities Commissioner: Unopposed McElwain doesn’t have experience to run facilities

By Daily Bruin Staff

April 29, 2002 9:00 p.m.

  Annie McElwain

Facilities commissioner Annie McElwain must be happy she’s
running unopposed ““ but she’s the only one.

Unless asked by the Editorial Board, McElwain didn’t ever
bring up issues relevant to the facilities commissioner’s
duties, such as housing and construction. When asked how to remedy
the construction problem, all she could think of was using
“propaganda” to put a positive spin on it for
students.

As facilities commissioner, McElwain will sit on the Wooden
Center’s decision-making board. Sadly, she couldn’t
assess the current quality of the center’s services, nor
articulate specific ways in which it could expand its breadth. But
she did want to boost services in another area: safety and
self-defense. However, this doesn’t fall under her job
description. And they’re not novel ideas. In fact, most come
from current facilities commissioner Jeremy McKenzie. It’s
not difficult to explain McElwain’s unfamiliarity with USAC
““ she has never been on it in any capacity. The SURE slate is
banking on her limited UCLA leadership experience in her sorority
to make her an effective council member.

It’s a shame McElwain will be a council member next year.
In not endorsing this candidate, we ask students to abstain from
voting for McElwain to prevent the ascension of unopposed
incompetence.
